Uttarakhand Implements Uniform Civil Code (UCC): Key Highlights

Uttarakhand becomes the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code. The UCC establishes common rules for marriage, inheritance, maintenance, and other civil matters across all religions

The UCC applies to all residents of Uttarakhand except protected Scheduled Tribes and communities under specific constitutional provisions.

The UCC accords daughters equal rights to parental property, irrespective of religion or community.

– Live-in relationships must be registered with the registrar. – The registrar will confidentially inform the parents of the couple about the registration.

Children born through live-in relationships will have equal rights to inherit property.

The minimum age for marriage is set at 21 years for men and 18 years for women across all religions.

Scheduled Tribes, as defined under Article 342 of the Constitution, are exempt from the provisions of the UCC to protect their traditions and rights.
